Many People Think Christmas Classic 'Baby It's Cold Outside' Is Actually A Rape Song

People say that the song glorifies sexual assault and alcoholism.

Trigger Warning: The following story mentions sexual assault and misconduct that might be disturbing to readers

Christmas is a festive and joyous time for everyone around the country. People celebrate the occasion with their families and loved ones. Christmas songs are an indispensable part of the holiday tradition. However, one popular Christmas song, Baby, It's Cold Outside, has stirred up a lot of controversies.

People have claimed that the song is actually about date rape. It became a particularly contentious issue when the #MeToo movement initially gained traction, as people all over the world went public with their stories of sexual misconduct and assault. Critics believe the song, made popular by the 1949 film Neptune's Daughter, is from another age, with the male vocalist urging the female singer to stay inside with him, per ABC News.

Glenn Anderson, a mid-day host on Cleveland's WDOK-FM, noted in a blog post that the 1940s song "has no place" in our culture today. He wrote, "Now, I do realize that when the song was written in 1944, it was a different time, but now while reading it, it seems very manipulative and wrong. The world we live in is extra sensitive now, and people get easily offended, but in a world where #MeToo has finally given women the voice they deserve, the song has no place."

Twitter users were enraged about the song, especially as it is still a part of Christmas. A user wrote, "The worst part is, the dude spikes the drink and the girl says 'well at least I tried!' That was mostly written by a sex offender."  Another user stated, "I hear that was a great time to be alive, when rape and alcoholism was acceptable."

There were some people who did defend the song. One Twitter user shared, "It was written by a married couple. The man to his wife. They recorded it together because their friends talked them into it. How does that make him a sex offender?" Another user explained, "Seriously? No. It was written by a man for his wife and he to perform at dinner parties. She was actually a little upset when he sold it. If people know shit about the time, and the tropes of the time, they know better. They BOTH want an excuse for her to stay."

The song has been debated by both sides with some people defending it and some claiming that it is about sexual abuse. Meanwhile, the song has received over 17 million views on Youtube since being posted in 2011.
