Cindy Watts had a lot of issues with her daughter-in-law. She did not even attend their wedding.
Trigger warning: The story contains graphic details of the murder that some readers may find distressing.
Parents are often supportive of their children. But nothing can justify a parent's decision to forgive their son for taking the lives of his wife and little daughters.
Chris Watts from Colorado mercilessly killed his pregnant wife, Shanann, and their little girls, Bella and Celeste, to be with his lover. Though he confessed to their murders, his mother Cindy Watts is unable to accept her son is a murderer.
According to The Sun, when Chris was sentenced in 2018, his mother spoke in support of him. She said, "I have always loved you and I still do. We love you and forgive you, son." Shockingly, his father too jumped to defend Chris. His father Ronnie said, "The Bible says if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us. Chris, I forgive you and your sister forgives you and we will never abandon you."
In addition to speaking publicly in support of their son, Cindy also tried to direct the blames of the murder on Chris's dead wife. She said, "It was a very hard relationship. It was a very hard relationship (with Shanann) as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't do anything right."
The mother did not refrain from accusing Shanann of turning her son into a cold murderer. "He was normal, he didn't have a temper, he was just easy-going like his Dad. He's not a monster," said the mother, according to ABC11.
She took the claims to another level when she said Shanann was more capable of committing the murders compared to her son. "I would say she's more capable than Christopher. Christopher, I don't see him capable at all."
Cindy and her late daughter-in-law did not have a good relationship. She was not in favor of her son marrying Shanann and did not even care to attend their wedding. Even years after Chris's marriage to Shanann, Cindy could not mend her relationship with her.
Weeks before the tragic event occurred, Cindy and Shanann had a big argument. Cindy picked up a pistachio ice cream for Celeste, who was allergic to nuts. Furious by her mother-in-law's irresponsible action that might have been life-threatening to her daughter, Shanann yelled at her. Eventually, it resulted in Cindy throwing her daughter-in-law out of her house.
Chris's family's accusation against Shanann motivated her family to speak up for her. "Shanann Watts was a faithful wife, and the most gentle and loving mother in the world to her children Bella, Celeste, and Nico. She was also the best daughter any parent could ever hope for. Shanann was a wonderful soul," said Shanann's family, in a statement, according to Denver Channel.
"Everyone who knew Shanann knows this to be true. Even Chris Watts knows this to be true. Yet Chris Watts still chose to murder Shanann, Bella, Celeste, and Nico. Chris Watts still chose to dump the bodies of his own family in oil tanks. And Chris Watts still chose to lie about it until he could lie no more. He pled (sic) guilty to murdering his family because he is guilty," it continued.
