Chris Watts, 35, a father-of-two killed his wife and kids because was having an affair, and wanted to be rid of his old life.
Facing challenges in a marriage is not uncommon. Sometimes, we take our partners for granted or they do the same. What matters is that we continue to communicate and find solutions together. However, not all families are functional, and sometimes, suppressed feelings come out in the worst way possible. People might stop communicating with their spouse or worse do something so bad, it can't be reversed.
Before Chris Watts, the 35-year-old father-of-two from Colorado, was sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife, two kids, and an unborn child in 2018, nobody would have guessed he was capable of it. Chris and his wife Shanann, who was pregnant with their third child, and two daughters, Bella and Celeste, were a happy family, as far as the world could see. However, Shanann's text messages show that all was not well before the tragedy took place.
When something is wrong in a relationship, women are sometimes able to figure it out before their partner does. It was her woman's instinct that told Shanann that Chris was not present in their marriage. She was probing what was going wrong between them before he ended her life.
The Netflix documentary on the family, American Murder: The Family Next Door, showed videos where Shanann gushed about her husband and he seemed like a caring husband and father. The documentary also revealed the mother-of-two's concerns about her marriage, as per Oxygen.
Just a few days before she died, Shanann messaged a friend. "Chris told me last night he's scared to death about this third baby. And he's happy with just Bella and Celeste and doesn't want another baby," she wrote, as per Fox31. The friend responded, "He's just scared. Everything will be fun once the baby comes out."
However, the mother-of-two was not convinced. She said, "He has changed. I don't know who he is." Her friend responded, "What do you mean?" Shanann texted, "He hasn't touched me all week, kissed me, talked to me except for when I'm trying to figure out what is wrong."
Back then, she didn't know that her third child was going to be a boy. She messaged her friend on August 7, 2018, saying, "I'm supposed to go tomorrow for 4D ultrasound and gender. Gender reveal next Sat. I just want to cry. We've never had a problem in our relationship like this. No joke. NEVER. THIS IS TOTAL LEFT FIELD."
When Shanann's friend tried to console her, she asked, "What if he really doesn't love me anymore?!" Her friend wrote, "Not possible honey. He LOVES YOU!" Shanann replied, "Tomorrow is 8 years we started dating."
Later, she told her friend, "He said we are not compatible anymore! He refused to hug me after he said he will try to "work" it out! Said he thought another baby would fix his feelings. Said, he refused couples counseling." The anonymous friend said, "Go through his phone, make sure there isn't some other b**ch I have to kill."
Her friend was not wrong as it turned out that Chris was seeing a colleague. Shanann further texted her friend saying, "This baby in my belly deserves his full love." Finally, she wrote, "Only thing I can think of even though I don't think he has it in him is another girl." She had been right about this and Chris just wanted her out of the way without making an effort.
Shanann also had a conflict with Chris's parents before he killed her. A couple of weeks before her death, she had traveled to her hometown of North Carolina and met Chris' parents, where his mom, Cindy, bought pistachio ice cream. Unfortunately, Celeste was allergic to nuts and the concerned mom yelled at Cindy, who threw her out of the house. Shanann told Chris that he should call his dad to "tell him you did not appreciate your mom putting your daughter at risk today." He replied, "I will call him and tell him what I think about this. It’s not f--king cool at all because it is the kids. I will set this right." The relationship further soured when Chris's parents didn't show up at Celeste’s birthday party. "I don’t ever want to see them again," Shanann texted a friend.
Chris murdered Shanann and their two kids in cold blood. A Facebook Fundraiser had been started to help the victims' family and they were able to raise more than $100,000.
