The mother had left the engine running with the car keys in the ignition of the unlocked car.
In a bizarre incident that unfolded in Oregon, a thief who stole a car with a baby in the backseat came back to lecture the mother about parenting.
According to the New York Post, a car thief returned to the mother with the stolen car and demanded her to take her child off the backseat. He then berated her for her carelessness and drove away.
“He actually lectured the mother for leaving the child in the car and threatened to call the police on her,” said Beaverton police spokesman, Officer Matt Henderson, according to Oregon Live.

Not sure how I feel about all this, but so happy, funny thief had such heart to care about a child😥

The incident took place outside the Basics Meat Market in the Portland suburb of Beaverton on 16 January 2021 at around 9:10 a.m. The mother parked her vehicle just outside the front door of the store and went away to get a gallon of milk and some meat. However, the only problem was that she had left her 4-year-old in the car with the engine running and the doors unlocked.
Within minutes, a thief hopped into her 2013 Honda Pilot and took off. Little did he know, he would be forced to return.
Realizing that a child was in the backseat, the thief took a quick U-turn and returned to the mother. “He orders her to take the kid out of the car, and she does,” said Henderson, according to Oregon Live.
The third then drove away in the stolen car. Referring to the incident as “a crime of opportunity," the officer stated that the thief went for it only because he saw the keys in the ignition of the unlocked car.
The Officer further went on to thank the thief for his thoughtful gesture. "Obviously, we’re thankful he brought the little one back and had the decency to do that," said Henderson. However, the officers are on the lookout for the man. The suspect is described to be a man in his 20s or 30s with dark brown or black braided hair. He was seen wearing a multi-colored face mask.
Public with any information regarding the crime can reach out to Beaverton police at 503-629-0111. The license plate of the mother's car is 357 GLV.
Meanwhile, Henderson stated that the mother did not commit any crime by leaving the kid in the car. “What she did was not a crime. She was within sight and sound of her child. But she left the car running, so take that extra step, take the keys with you. It’s a good reminder to take extra precaution when we have our little ones with us," said the officer.
