The 43-year-old singer never "in a million years" thought he'd have a bond with her. "All of a sudden, and she became my closest ally, my friend, my person in my life who had my back, and I had hers."
When Gwen Stefani turned 50, it was a sweet message from the man she loves that captured how happy their relationship has made them both.
In just a few words, Blake Shelton showed how much he loved her with the message he wrote on Twitter.
Happy Birthday @gwenstefani!!!! I love you so much it’s actually stupid... And possibly illegal in the state of California.— Blake Shelton (@blakeshelton) October 3, 2019
The 43-year-old singer has gushes about his love for her whenever he gets the chance and he gives her the credit for saving "his life" when he had hit rock bottom. When he had just gotten out of his divorce, Shelton told Billboard, "I was at rock bottom, in the middle of hell."
Until then, he "never really got to know her, other than small talk" when they both would appear on the show, The Voice.
Shelton thought that he might never see her again after Stefani didn't return for the eighth season of the show. But he was touched to see her reaction when he told her about his divorce. Shelton said, "I looked over at Gwen -- who I didn't really know -- and she had these huge tears in her eyes. I thought, 'Wow, she feels super bad for me!'"
But there may have been more than just empathy to it because Gwen, too, was on her way to being separated from her husband at the time.
Although they both went through the difficult process of divorce, Shelton and Stefani were later drawn to each other and grew closer.
"She didn't tell me much, because we didn't know each other at the time, but she said, 'I'm going through something very similar to what you're going through. I understand. And I hate it.' That's kind of how our friendship and bond started, that day." Shelton went on to say, "It went from that, to checking in on each other once a week through email -- 'This shit happened to me, what happened to you?' -- to maybe three times a week, then every day, to 'Hey, here's my phone number if you ever want to text.' Next thing I know, I wake up and she's all I care about, and I'm wondering if she feels the same about me."
Neither of them imagined that they would end up with each other. But everything started to align in their relationship at the right time. "All of a sudden, and she became my closest ally, my friend, my person in my life who had my back, and I had hers," the country singer told Rolling Stone. "And created this bond with somebody that I never would have thought in a million years."
As for Stefani, the one thing she wishes is that she knew him sooner. She told Today, "I am so obsessed with Blake Shelton that I went back and I watched old interviews between you guys because I’m so fascinated that he was alive back then; I didn’t know him."
The seven-year age gap between them hasn't come in their way of having a happy relationship and will celebrate four years of being together in November, according to People.
It isn't just her that Shelton is able to love and cherish, but also her sons, Kingston, Zuma, and Apollo. The mother of three said, "He is a good dad, actually. He’s been helping me out a lot, so I literally get to the point where I’m like, ‘You gotta get home, I need help.’ It’s hard. I got three boys."
She also added, "I just never thought in my wildest dreams, on paper, a cowboy and a ska-like girl from Anaheim would be hanging out, but it works perfect and we’re just having so much fun, and we just feel so blessed to be at this point in our lives."
When he was asked about the future, Shelton told Entertainment Tonight, "I gotta say that we couldn't be happier, and we've never been doing better." He added that their bond "gets stronger every day. Obviously, that's gotta lead somewhere."
