The actor revealed that he still respects Garner, who helped him through his dark days, but believes that the marriage had run its course.
Ben Affleck has been candid about his struggle with alcohol addiction over the years and admitted recently that he still might be drinking if he stayed in a marriage where he was unhappy. The Daredevil actor and Jennifer Garner first started dating in 2004 and got married the following year. The two had been together for over ten years sharing three children: Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, 9. During their marriage, Affleck had some really dark moments and Garner did her best to stand by her man through rough waters. While the two announced their split in 2015, their divorce was finalized in 2018 because the actress wanted to give Affleck time to heal.

"[She] was very emotional but decided to take the situation into her own hands," an eyewitness told ET at the time. “Deep down he knows he can't live the life he used to," a source said of Affleck's addiction struggles. "He knows that life was the downfall of his marriage. Jen set boundaries, she did everything to help him. She stuck by him and gave him ultimatums but he’d eventually fall off the wagon. He would go back to partying and gambling and she would try again. This has been going on for years.” The Argo actor had previously been to rehab in 2001 and 2017.
The pair also tried their best to make the marriage work but it was in vain. Affleck recently appeared on the Howard Stern Show and spoke about the struggles he had been through during that time. As per PEOPLE, the 49-year-old shared, "I'd probably still be drinking. It's part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped. I was like 'I can't leave 'cause of my kids, but I'm not happy, what do I do?' What I did was drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution."
Affleck also admitted that the reason why their marriage ultimately didn't work out is that they "grew apart." "The truth was, we took our time, we made the decision … We grew apart," Affleck explained. "We had a marriage that didn't work, this happens, with somebody that I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn't be married any longer. Ultimately, we tried. We tried, we tried because we had kids. Both of us felt like we don't want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage."

The marriage clearly had run its course and the pair decided to go their separate ways. While they still co-parent their kids it seems Affleck still loves and respects Garner but realized they were better off not being married. On a personal front, he seems to be doing better even rekindling the romance with former flame Jennifer Lopez. 17 years after calling off their engagement in 2004, the two are back together again. A source told PEOPLE, "They are doing really well. Jennifer (Lopez) loves being with Ben. She feels it's truly meant to be." Another source added, "For Jennifer, Christmas is all about the kids," the source shared. "She makes it very special for them. She loves Christmas. This year, it will take some more planning since Ben wants to be with his kids, too. They haven't made any specific holiday decisions yet and are still working it all out."
