Being Single For Long Makes You Happier, Study Reveals

Who knew that being on your own could teach you so much more about what makes you happier than ever?

It's a real shame when people seem to think that you can't handle being single. Everyone is always hinting at finding someone for you or for you to jump back into the dating pool. But they don't realize that you aren't exactly suffering because you're single. But there's something about being on your own that makes you feel more complete than ever.

You aren't very eager to have to get back into a relationship that may or may not cause you pain. You definitely aren't looking forward to meeting so many guys just so that you can try to figure out which one is going to treat you with respect. However, that happiness that you're feeling is actually because you've been single for a long period of time.

Here's why:

1. You embrace the silence and let it wash over you

That awkwardness or fear of being lonely or going anywhere on your own has disappeared. You now love the silence that surrounds you because you have the chance to empty your mind. The need to constantly hold up a conversation is done away with and you enjoy observing the little things around you that you may not have noticed before. You don't equate being alone with loneliness anymore.

2. You know how to focus on what makes you content

Not having to deal with the needs of a romantic partner has eased the burden off your chest. You have the time to focus on yourself and indulge in a little self-care. Not only is that making you happier but it's also making you healthier. Not to mention, doing things that make you happy is giving you an opportunity to take up a new skill or improve on your talents.

3. You'd rather chase your dreams than chase guys

Having to keep up with your boyfriend meant that you had less time to follow your dreams. You were always mindful of them and so it took a toll on your plans. But ever since you've been single, your mind is racing with all the possibilities on how to make your dream a reality. You're also learning so many things on the way and it brings you a sense of purpose and satisfaction.

4. You've had the time to learn what makes you 'you'

It seemed like being in a relationship always made you feel like someone who was suppressing her desires just so that their partner could be themselves. You believed that you liked what they liked because, in reality, you never had the opportunity to find out what makes up your personality. But now you do and it couldn't be more exhilarating. You've learned more about yourself. In fact, you did the one thing you never even imagined. You saw the potential you had and were able to tap into that raw energy. Now, you exude confidence.

5. You now know what it is you want if you ever do get into a relationship

Being single has given you insight into how a healthy relationship should be. You probably considered your past ones and were able to identify what went wrong. Maybe it was the lack of communication or the trust issues or even the way he was treating you. It's given you a clear idea of how you want a future relationship to be. You know exactly what you want from it and your partner and will not settle for anything less.

6. You have no one to make you feel ashamed about who you are

You built up the kind of confidence that no one can break. You no longer ever feel the need to tie your self-worth to someone else and holding your head up with pride is what you do best. Being single means you don't have to worry about a partner who might feel threatened by your intelligence and talent and hence, try to bring you down. You give no one that power - not now and not ever.

7. You learned to love yourself

All of this combined has shown you that nothing matters more than being yourself. You know that you have flaws and there's no one there to pick on them. Which means that you have learned that all your flaws and insecurities are a part of you. There's no reason to feel bad about it because you know that you are able to learn from your mistakes. You know that you're willing to look to the future and see a better you. You love yourself and there's not a force in this world that can make you change your mind.

Being in a relationship is not everything in the world - not when it has so much more to offer. You've learned that and you've taken advantage of all that knowledge to make yourself the kind of person whose strength can survive anything. No one had to make you happy because you did it yourself and it makes you feel amazing.
