Anthony Hopkins Walked Out On Daughter When She Was 14-Months-Old, The Topic Is Now Taboo!

“I would see him, but maybe once a year. There is a little bit of sadness but I have to get on with my life," Abigail Hopkins revealed in an interview with the Telegraph

Two-time Oscar-winning actor, Anthony Hopkins, is one of Hollywood's well-known movie stars. His most recent win is for his role in 'The Father'. The actor revealed that his own journey as a father has been a turbulent one. He spoke about his dark past and how his greatest regret is never having mended things with his estranged daughter, jazz singer Abigail Hopkins reported Newsner

Abigail Hopkins says that her father walked out on her and her mother, Petronella Barker when she was just 14 months old and they have had a difficult relationship ever since.

In an interview with the Telegraph, she said, “I would see him, but maybe once a year. There is a little bit of sadness but I have to get on with my life." Anthony Hopkins went on to reveal that his alcohol problem had affected his life and relationships greatly. It was so bad that he thought he “should have died in Wales, drunk or something like that”. Despite cleaning up his act his relationship with his daughter didn’t improve. It was a little too late. Abigail revealed that when she was sixteen the two had a row over a comment her father made about her mother, reported Newsner

The two stopped seeing each other and Abigail's life went downhill. She became a drug addict, was suicidal, and ended up dropping out of college. “I came very close to killing myself. It was the worst time I can remember. I totally abused my mind and body. The root cause was the fact that my father and I had an intermittent relationship when I was young. I was angry and there was a lot of grieving going on," she revealed. The two would go on to reconcile only in the 1990s when she had a couple of cameo roles alongside her father in Remains of the Day and Romeo vs Juliet. However, that wasn't enough to heal old wounds. Anthony Hopkins still refuses to talk about the subject, calling it a "taboo". “I want no word on that. The past is sealed. I have regrets. You can’t undo things. You have to get on with life – live it and don’t look back," he said in an interview The Sunday Times Magazine, reported Newsner

Abigail went on to become an accomplished musician and composer and has appeared in ten films and TV documentaries. In 2018, Anthony Hopkins admitted that he hasn't seen or spoken to her and didn't know if he had any grandchildren. "I don’t have an idea. People break up. Families split and, you know, ‘Get on with your life.’ People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other," he told the Radio Times. When told that his reply sounded cold, he explained, “Well, it is cold. Because life is cold. It’s like John Osborne’s response when someone said to him, ‘Mr Osborne, your play is offensive,’ and he said, ‘Life is offensive’," reported Newsner
