To be there for each other "in sickness and in health" they had vowed while tying the knot, and this wonderful couple continues to do so after over six beautiful decades together.
When you're truly in love, even a lifetime together doesn't feel like it's enough. When you read the story of Karl and Donna Von Schwarz, you'll know what we mean. The two of them were high school sweethearts and have spent decade after decade by each other's side. It was in the year of 1956 that both of them tied the knot and vowed to spend the rest of their lives with each other. Four children, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren later, their love is still as strong as it was on the day Karl got down on one knee for the first time.
"They're really just such amazing people, I've never met anyone like them," said Christina Von Schwarz, the couple's granddaughter. "They're definitely something to strive for in a relationship," as reported by WFAA.
Of all the years the couple has spent together, 2018 was one of the most difficult one thus far. It was tough on them because Donna was in the hospital for a major part of the year, going through open heart surgery, a seizure and even a stroke. While 81-year-old Donna had to walk in and out of rehab throughout the year, 84-year-old Karl was always beside her. In the 63 years of marriage that they shared together, they have held each other's hands and walked through ups and downs.
Their granddaughter, Karly Gibbs told CBS News, "Grandpa never left her side. The rehab center brought in a chair where he slept every night until she was strong enough to come home."
It wasn't just Karl's undying love that Donna was able to lean on. She also had her husband's promise of buying her a new engagement ring when she was ready to come home. And not only did he keep his promise, but he also made the moment extra special by getting down on his knee after being married for six decades. That day, as Karl pushed Donna in a wheelchair through a JC Penney store and they chose a diamond ring for her. After some encouragement from the family, he proposed to her once again. But the proposal wasn't something Donna expected.
"What in the world?" said Donna, who felt the same feeling she did 63 years ago, said. Sometimes wedding vows often become mere words when couples say them to each other. But for this couple, upheld their vows "in sickness and in health". Watching Donna walk in and out of the hospital has been hard on the entire family. But they have been able to witness how Karl and Donna's love for each other never diminishes.
"The last few times I've seen her, every time I've said goodbye like it's the last time so it's definitely been hard," said Christina. "It's just been really hard on everyone." And getting down on his knee once again after all these years was just a small part of it.
"It was great because it's a gal that I've loved all of my life," said Karl. "It was very easy. You know we've been together so long that we can't stay apart really." Donna also loves her new ring, as she laughed and said, "It's really beautiful. It's gorgeous."
My grandma has been very sick & we don’t know how much time she has left. After over 65 years of marriage my grandpa got her a new ring and proposed to her again.... I don’t know why I’m crying in the club rn pic.twitter.com/PdIiZrLRhs— ❃ tina ❃ (@christinacherie) March 3, 2019
The story isn't just a proclamation of how strong love can be to their family, but also to the rest of the world. Christina said, "I'm just proud that it's as touching to us as it is to everyone else, and they get the recognition for how strong they really are."
