Adele was shocked when she heard her father gave an exclusive interview about her life for money.
It is not wrong for a daughter to expect respect, love, and guidance from her father. While many of us might have had admirable fatherly figures, singer Adele did not have such a privilege. Instead of trying to mend their relationship, her father who walked out on her at a very young age took advantage of her fame without her knowledge.
Adele's childhood was far from perfect. Her father, Mark Evans walked away from her life when she was just 3 years old. Left with her single mother, Penny Adkins, Adele struggled all throughout her childhood. However, her passion for music paved her way into the world of entertainment. She was no more just a girl from a broken home in London but a feisty talented woman loved by thousands around the globe.
While life changed for the best, the relationship with her father remained estranged and further worsened after he gave a paid exclusive interview to a tabloid. He told the press about her difficult childhood and explained the reasons for his absence. He even shared some pictures of her as a little girl without her knowledge.
“I was a rotten father at a time when she really needed me. I was not there for my daughter when I should have been and I have regretted that every second of every day to this moment now. It tears me up inside," said Evans, according to The Sun. He admitted to being an alcoholic and stated, "I drank like that for three years. God only knows how I survived it. I was deeply ashamed of what I’d become and I knew the kindest thing I could do for Adele was to make sure she never saw me in that state.”
He further admitted he had not heard a lot of her music or even attended her shows. “I’ve never been to one of her shows or even listened to her music very much," said the man. In addition, he accused his daughter of lying about their relationship and said it might be her means to hide her painful past from the public.
Meanwhile, the news of his interview did not sit well with Adele, who is known to be a private person. She was furious and did not imagine her father to spill out the stories of her life for money.
Speaking to Vogue, she did not shy away from voicing her true feelings. She said, "I was actually ready to start trying to have a relationship with him. He's f---ing blown it. He will never hear from me again. Because there is nothing that would upset me more than my dad being bribed by the press. It's like, 'Just let them run it, then. Don't you give them ammunition,'" according to EOnline. Clearly infuriated by her father's thoughtless actions, she said, "It makes me angry! To come back after 10 years and be like, 'Maybe her problem with men comes down to me.' It's like, 'F--k off! How dare you comment on my life?' It makes my blood boil."
She added, "There's consequences other than just getting a bit of f---ing money that lasts you half a year," she says. "It blows my mind. 'I love her so much.' [he told the rag] Really? Why are you telling me that through a newspaper? If I ever see him I will spit in his face," according to Eonline.
Though the years went by, Adele refused to reconcile with her father. Accepting her Grammy Award in 2017, the singer took to the stage to thank her team and longtime manager Jonathan Dickins for his support. She said, "Thank you to my manager because the comeback, as it were, was completely masterminded by him. And you executed it incredibly, and I owe you everything. We’ve been together for 10 years, and I love you like you’re my dad. I love you so, so much," according to Variety. She also used that chance to make a clear statement about her relationship with her dad. She said, "I don’t love my dad, that’s the thing. That doesn’t mean a lot."
