According to a BBC report, a study called 'Sex on the Brain?' conducted by Dr. Terri D. Fisher found that women think about sex 10 times a day while men, on an average, daydream about sex 19 times in the same amount of time! Well, if you look at the many benefits of physical intimacy on your mind and body, it wouldn't be surprising if people engaged in it more often!

Here are six little known ways in which sex can help boost your mind and health.

1. Sex boosts your immune system

 



 

Having sex is the best way to keep your immune system humming and healthy. We naturally depend on different solutions when our body is attacked by external bacteria, whether it's hitting the hot bath to flush out the bacteria or having medicines to bring your body back to its original functional self.

Immunoglobulin A (IGA) is an antibody that helps fight these external bacteria, and having sex is the best way to spike the levels of these antibodies. A study by Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania talks about how having sex once or twice a week can boost IGA levels by 30 percent in your body. You're likely to get sick less often and have a healthier functioning immune system.

2. It's a natural stress buster



 

Haven't you noticed how a crying baby instantly calms down when they feel touch of the mother? That's the magic of touch, especially if it's someone you love. Being close to your partner and engaging in touch and feel is the best way to reduce stress and anxiety. Sheenie Ambardar, MD a psychiatrist in West Hollywood, California says that hugging and touching can release your body's 'feel-good hormone' which kickstarts your brain's pleasure and reward system. Sex and intimacy can boost your self-esteem and happiness, too, says Ambardar.

3. Physical intimacy helps in decreasing blood pressure

 



 

High blood pressure is interlinked with several problems such as strokes, dizziness, and diabetes caused by stress and anxiety. Science shows that physical intimacy is connected to reducing the chances of getting heart diseases and reducing blood pressure.

According to researchers, men who engaged in sex twice a week were 45% less likely to develop heart diseases. Another observation made by Dr. E. Dean Nukta, MD, a medical director of interventional cardiology at Cleveland’s Fairview Hospital says that “Orgasm in women stimulates the release of the hormone oxytocin, which has a direct effect on lowering blood pressure."

4. Sex can decrease the chances of prostate cancer



 

Based on a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, having sex frequently is said to ward off prostate cancer, where men who ejaculated on average of 21 times a month were less likely to develop prostate cancer. Researchers found out that men who were sexually active were less likely to acquire sexually transmitted diseases that would infect the prostate, cause inflammations or other kinds of damage. Marc Garnick, M.D., Editor in Chief of Harvard Medical School’s Annual Report on Prostate Diseases, said: "Two relatively large studies of this question, reported in 2003 and 2004, yielded good news for sexually active men: high ejaculation frequency seemed to protect against prostate cancer."

5. It helps you get better sleep

 



 

So how does having sex really help one sleep soundly? Apparently, both sex and sleep go hand in hand. More the sex, better the sleep, which in turn helps boost your sex drive. It goes without saying that a de-stressed, relaxed and pleasure satiated individual is likely to get better sleep.

Having sex is said to release a hormone called prolactin, which makes you sleep faster. According to LiveScience, two other chemicals released during orgasms, oxytocin and vasopressin, are associated with sleep. Sometimes, vigorous bouts of sex could leave both partners wide awake.

6.  Sex is the best medicine to dull pain caused by life


 


 

Barry R. Komisaruk, Ph.D., a professor at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey states that the endorphins released during sex or physical exertion are equivalent to the feeling that morphine gives. Having orgasm is also a great way to dull the pain. “We’ve found that vaginal stimulation can block chronic back and leg pain, and many women have told us that genital self-stimulation can reduce menstrual cramps, arthritic pain, and in some cases even headache,” Komisaruk adds. The beneficial aspects of sex are also closely related to the comforting feeling people gain from music.
