24-Year-Old Woman to Marry Herself in a Traditional Wedding | “An Act of Self-Acceptance”

"I never wanted to get married. But I did want to become a bride. So I decided to marry myself."

A 24-year-old woman from India is all set to marry herself at her wedding on May 11.

This wedding will include all Hindu rituals from taking "pheras" to putting traditional vermilion. However, the groom and the baraat which is a procession to celebrate the groom and involves dancing and live music will be missing. This is the first self-marriage or sologamy in the state of Gujarat. Kshama Bindu, the bride, spoke to the Times of India, "I never wanted to get married. But I did want to become a bride. So I decided to marry myself."

She further said that ever since her teens, the concept of marriage never appealed to her, reports Times Now News. Kshama heard an actress say that "every woman wants to be a bride but not a wife." "And, thereon, my thoughts to marry myself got re-ignited."

According to Global News, "Sologamy is the act of marrying oneself and the growing relationship trend has seen more and more women in the U.K., Australia, Japan, Taiwan and the U.S., walk down the aisle by themselves to give themselves away to themselves."

Bindu holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and is presently employed as a Senior Recruitment Officer at a private firm. Her parents are both engineers. Her father lives in South Africa, while her mother lives in Ahmedabad, reports India Today

She conducted some internet research to see whether any woman in the nation had married herself but she was not able to find such a marriage. She said, "Maybe I am the first to set an example of self-love in our country."

Bindu further said, "Self-marriage is a commitment to be there for yourself and unconditional love for oneself. It’s also an act of self-acceptance. People marry someone they love. I love myself and hence this wedding." She stated that some people may regard self-marriage as unimportant but she focuses on it primarily. She said, "But what I am actually trying to portray is that women matter."

Bindu's wedding preparations are nearly complete with invitations distributed and her wedding dress ordered. Her parents are accepting and have given their approval for the wedding. She has penned five vows for her wedding, which will be held in a temple in Gotri. Her post-wedding plans include a two-week honeymoon in Goa.

Alexandra Gill runs Marry Yourself Vancouver, a company that helps single women make their dream weddings come true. She told Global News, "By marrying themselves, women can celebrate their independence and personal growth while making a sacred commitment to whatever responsibilities and promises nourish their uniquely singular lives."
