16-Year-Old Boy Is Charged For Fatally Stabbing 17-Year-Old At House Party Last Weekend

Four people were injured during the incident and one of them succumbed to his injuries.

A 16-year-old from Connecticut has been charged for fatally stabbing a 17-year-old during a fight at a house party.

Four teenagers were stabbed in this dispute that happened at a home in Shelton. Shelton Police rushed to the residence on Saturday evening, just before midnight, after allegations of a brawl and a stabbing, and saw numerous teenagers wandering about outside, reports PEOPLE.

The four wounded teenagers were all transported to surrounding hospitals for treatment. According to Shelton Police, James McGrath, 17, was the only one who died as a result of his injuries. McGrath was a junior and represented Fairfield College Preparatory School in football and lacrosse.

According to the statement released by the police, the 16-year-old suspect was apprehended early Wednesday. The identity of the teenager has not been revealed as he is still a juvenile. The boy has been charged with murder and three charges of first-degree assault. A $2 million bond has been set for the suspect.

The school has also released a statement to honor McGrath. They wrote in the statement, "Jimmy was a beloved student and athlete on the football and lacrosse teams, and will forever be a member of the Prep Brotherhood." The statement further said that more than 1,000 people gathered on campus for a private prayer session on Sunday. A schoolwide service was also conducted on Monday during which President Christian Cashman addressed students, professors, and staff.

Cashman said, "I offer once again Prep’s loving condolence and embrace of the McGrath family. May the Spirit of healing peace and love enfold them, and may we be instruments of peace and healing in the days ahead." He added, "May God bless Jimmy McGrath, Class of 2023, forever a Man for Others, forever a Son of Fairfield Prep."

Kevin McGrath, James McGrath's father, spoke to New York Post, "Just give me a little time to process everything." He added, "We’re happy that an arrest was made. The investigation is still ongoing and Shelton police have been just extremely supportive and helpful to get us closer to closure."

Neighbors in the peaceful area stated the family that lived in the house where the incident occurred kept to themselves most of the time. They said the gatherings and parties were usual and sometimes, a little loud. However, according to John Misurale, these gatherings were never disruptive or violent. He told Connecticut Post, "I was shocked. I was at home but I didn’t know what had happened."

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support McGrath's family during this devastating and challenging time.
